Turning support into real, lasting change

Proactive, community-driven support that equips youth with the tools, resources, and mentorship to overcome barriers and build empowered lives.

Barriers Breakthrough takes a hands-on, relationship-centered approach to impact—focusing not just on what youth are facing, but how they move forward. By creating consistent touchpoints through events, outreach, and community partnerships, the organization builds trust and keeps young people connected to positive influences. Each interaction is designed to reinforce accountability, expose participants to new possibilities, and shift mindsets from limitation to opportunity. Whether through skill-building experiences, access to essential items, or simply being a reliable presence, Barriers Breakthrough helps individuals develop resilience, expand their vision for the future, and take meaningful steps toward independence and stability.

Guiding Youth from Challenge to Confidence

Youth and young adults in Phoenix and the greater Maricopa County area face increasing exposure to social, emotional, and environmental challenges that significantly impact their well-being and long-term outcomes.

Substance use among youth remains a critical concern. According to the Arizona Youth Survey, over 38% of high school students in Phoenix report recent alcohol use, and up to 15% report marijuana use—highlighting early exposure to risky behaviors. Additionally, 13.7% of young adults (ages 18–25) in Arizona report having a substance use disorder, demonstrating how these risks often progress into early adulthood without intervention.

Housing instability and homelessness further compound these challenges. In Maricopa County, over 9,700 individuals experience homelessness on any given day, including more than 1,100 children and youth. Data from the Arizona Department of Economic Security shows that among the unsheltered population, 38% experience mental illness and 42% struggle with substance use disorders—underscoring the urgent need for earlier, more accessible support systems.

Despite the growing need, access to preventative, community-based education and mentorship programs remains limited. Many existing systems are reactive—intervening only after crisis situations such as substance dependency, homelessness, or justice system involvement have already occurred. This gap leaves many youth without the guidance, resources, and safe environments needed to make informed, healthy decisions during critical stages of development.

Barriers Breakthrough exists to change that trajectory. Through proactive, community-driven programming, the organization provides youth and young adults with access to mentorship, life-skills training, mental health awareness, substance abuse education, and resource navigation. By creating safe, engaging spaces for learning and connection, Barriers Breakthrough meets individuals where they are—offering consistent support before challenges escalate into crises.

By focusing on early intervention and long-term empowerment, Barriers Breakthrough helps disrupt cycles of trauma, reduce risk behaviors, and strengthen decision-making, communication, and self-confidence. The organization not only addresses immediate needs but also equips participants with the tools to pursue education, stable employment, and healthy relationships—ultimately building a stronger, more resilient community for generations to come.
