Within just a few years of aging out, nearly 1 in 5 will experience homelessness, while unemployment rates can exceed 50%, limiting their ability to build independent, sustainable lives. Many have faced repeated disruptions in education, contributing to lower graduation rates and fewer opportunities for higher education or skilled careers. At the same time, untreated trauma and lack of access to mental health resources increase the likelihood of substance use, system involvement, and long-term economic instability.

The cost of inaction is not only personal—it is systemic. Youth who experience homelessness, incarceration, or chronic unemployment place increased demand on public systems including healthcare, housing, and the justice system, costing communities thousands per individual each year. Conversely, research consistently shows that early intervention programs—such as mentorship, housing support, education access, and workforce development—significantly improve outcomes, increasing employment rates, reducing recidivism, and strengthening long-term economic mobility. Every dollar invested in prevention and support yields measurable returns in reduced public spending and stronger community outcomes.
